I used to have 2 crt monitors hooked upto my computer until BOTH stopped working after about 2 weeks of using them together, one was brand new(got replaced under warrenty) and the other several years old. I have been told this is caused by the magnetic field CRTs produce. Is there any truth to this ?

Unlikely. That magnetic field is more likely to produce distortion and color shift, not causing the monitor to cease function.

more than likely the refresh rate was set to high for the resolution.
