There's a security flaw in IE 5.5 and 6.0. Microsoft said it will affect everybody using there browser. They don't have a pacth for it, but theres work around from tech tv. Here's what you need to do:

1. In IE 6.0, go to "tools"
2. Go to "Internet Options"
3. Go to "Secuurity"
3. Go to "Custom Level"
4. Scroll near the bottom of the screen and choose "disable" on these items:
Active Scripting (disable) and:
Scripting of Java applets (disable)

Apparently, hackers can get to your cookies very easily with a simple URL. Microsoft should be releasing a patch very soon, but until then, make sure you use these settings for now. Just check Microsoft's web site every now
and then to see it they have a patch.

Thanks
Atol

Even though this is the wrong forum to post this in, I'm glad you posted it. Thanks...

(BTW, make sure you post it in the Windows 9x and the Windows 2000 forums.)

IE sucks a big fat one!!!
Toooooooooo many security holes!

People who use IE should migrate to Opera and/or the newest version of Netscape-verion 6.2 (6.2 is waaay better than 6.0 and 6.1).

you try building a stinkin web site for 5 platforms!?
i want to see you rewrite 500 lines of code for each stinkin browser!

its not only the surfers you know..
plus its the download time when you up the site, that or scripts on the server that cost valuable CPU time..

Yes, I know how hard it can be to build a web page to work properly with multiple browsers.

But jeeze, you don't know how many freakin' rediculous MS security holes there are...from Outlook Express to IE--that's why I use Lunux =)

Speaking of scripts, IE 6.0 doesn't even support Java (you'll have to download a seperate plug-in)!!!

I agree. I'm using 5.0 and I find that it's actually a bit faster in addion to being more secure than the newer versions.

Yeah...

I was thinkin' if I clean install Win98SE, I should just leave IE as is, and not install 6.0. It's probably better, huh?

Well I'm a pretty avid IE fan, but the way Microsoft is going with their latest releases of IE I think it might be close to time to find a new browser.

Yes, I have to agree with you on that.

I have a triple-boot with windows and linux, when I use my Windows OS, I tried updating to all the latest software/fixes. After installing IE 6.0, it totally screwed up Win2k--outlook and IE wouldn't work properly, my address book got fuc|<ed up, etc...removing 6.0 and going back to 5.0 solved the problem. I admit I use IE sometimes--i upgraded 5.5 only because I like the "Print Preview" button.

Netscape 6.2 has been pretty good to me so far....no crashes or errors or security holes (yet). Only problem is that not ALL webpages show up correctly. Opera is very good too.

Alright, just clean installed Win98SE. Had to install IE 5.01 SP2, since there were some issues that needed to be resolved. But, now I can't seem to install this May 16, 2001 update. It just won't install. I don't know what to do...

Hmmm. The security updates needed for version 5.0 included with windows are probably included in the larger "critical updates" package. If you're using a later version of IE and you can't install some updates, I don't know what to say. I've seen installs not work on one day the work on the next, based primarily on how busy the server at MS was.

Back to you Tom...

i personally use the IE-5.5.

anyway, does any one here want to see a bug that we developed?
it couses a crash under win95/98,all IE versions, even by E-Mail, or just a simple web page.
just 1 line, most part simple HTML.
this is our groups master piece.
-btw affects WIN98SE as well, its a kernel issue.

One of the reasons MS has so many security holes is that everyone out there is out to expose them. If linux or Opera's browser commanded the amount of attention MS gets then i assure you, lots of bugs and security holes would be uncovered.

Phooey.

Has anyone used <A HREF="http://www.pcpitstop.com" target="_new">PCPitStop</A> to test their computer system? That's why I upgraded to 5.01 SP2. If I didn't see the security issue that PCPitStop showed me after a test, I wouldn't have updated...

Nope.

Ever hear about the many contest held by Linux users/hackers to try and find and expose a security hole in different programs (like an e-mail client, for example) in which you can win big bucks if you succeed?? Hmm....does MS hold such events?
There are security holes in Linux and some of it's programs/software, but nowhere as many as the MS, IE, and Outlook!

Yeah, but there are more people who try to hack anything MS than there are Linux users as a whole! Granted, Linux does have better security but the bugs and flaws its products contain don't get nearly as much lime-light as the bugs and flaws MS products contain.

I think I've confirmed the problem to be IE 5.01 SP2 updates. I installed Win2K CD a friend gave it to me, who got it from Indonesia. It's certainly not a copy of a retail CD, cuz I always get an error copying Arialbi.ttf during setup.

Anyways, I just tried updating Critical Updates. All but those that were for IE 5.01 SP2 couldn't get installed.
