Do XPS M 1730 and AW M17x use desktop cpus?

If so would a i7 920 slot into either of them?

I have an XPS atm and am going to recieve a m17x very soon.

No, the laptops use different sockets.

cool. i have heard all the hype of a desktop cpu in a laptop, so instantly thats the conclusion i came to, but had no other info about it, its a shame tho, could you imagine the possibilities, i wonder what the socket for a m17x is?

It has a PGA478 socket. The i7 920 1366 socket, is a desktop CPU. If you wanted to put an i7 in a laptop, you would want the i7 920QM. It's a PGA988 socket.

Aford10, you have made my day lol! i was curious to know whether it was worth going for an upgrade of the cpu that dell provide but if i can put an i7 920 in for $320ish thats cheaper than a dell upgrade to a basic quaddy or a better dual core!

No problem. Just make sure you have a compatible motherboard if you go that route.

Your right about the mobo! I believe base is only a dual core and the max at the moment in Australia is a Quad core, with that i think they are not the same socket type as the mobile i series!

It also baffles me how intel brand the mobile chips the same as desktop. They are not the same, they have different ghz abilities, caches etc sometimes.
