What causes an electrical surge making bulbs brighten and burn out

home, wired with bx, had some type of power surge? causing light bulbs to brighten and blow out. Any suggestions , causes, or possible fixes? I replaced most old ungrounded receptacles with 3 prong and gounded the new receptacle to the metal boxes. Could I have caused a short circuit?

A loose connection in the outlet or switch will cause that. The power company can cause that. A short circuit will trip the breaker, not cause a surge.
