When I type, It replaces characters...

Whenever I type a character or space, instead of "adding" the character it
merely replaces the one in front. This problem occurs during IM
conversations, word prossesing e.t.c. and is really annoying. Please help me!

That's called "insert" mode.

That's called "typeover" mode.

You can be in either mode and it's very easy to switch between
them. That's the function of the "Insert" key.
