I have a claim they are telling me the equipment warranty is only good for 5 years- so whats the point of a lifetime warranty on the box??????

Looks like they mean the life is 5 years (lifetime). Lifetime is sometimes misinterpreted to mean forever. It stands for the specified life of the product, in this case, 5 years. One of those tricky terms.
