Hi all-
I'm looking for a portable laptop but with good performance for about $1000. I don't do any video editing or stuff like that, but I'd like a fast system for movies, music, and casual gaming- I only play WoW right now but I might branch out.

Any suggestions for which of these is a better system?

Lenovo Ideapad Y550 for $1058
15.6" screen / 15.2" x 10" / weight 6 .06 lbs
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P8700 (2.53GHz 1066MHz 3MBL2)
RAM: 4 GB DDR3@ 1066MHz
Hard drive: 500GB, 5400rpm
Screen: 1366*768 res
Graphics: nVidia Geforce 240M - 1GB [ranked 37 on notebookcheck]
Vista Home 64 bit

ASUS N81VP for $1000
14" screeen / 13.47" x 10.08" x 1.41" - 1.47" / Weight 5.5 lbs.
Intel Core 2 Duo T9550 (2.66GHz 1066MHz 6MBL2)
RAM: 4GB DDR2 @ 800MHz
Harddrive: 320GB, 7200 rpm
Screen: 1366*768 res
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 120M - 1GB [ranked 60]
Vista Home 32-bit

I suppose I'll have to install windows 7 64-bit if I get the latter.
Does 7200 rpm hard drive make a big difference?
any comments would be appreciated.
thanks!

^Only if you care about quick start-up times or run programs that are constantly accessing the HDD for files. For games, it may slow map loading down a little bit, but shouldn't be bad. The GT 240M in the Lenovo is a lot better than the GT 120 and the difference in processor speed isn't all that great. I would pick the Lenovo over the Asus if you don't mind a little extra size and weight.

Asus also has the N51 which would compete directly with the Lenovo, specs are almost exactly the same: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6834220566

The first one is better of course. It has a G240 should play most games fluently but some high-end games like Crysis ...
