Please read the following.....For all those that are confused.....

Dispelling the Confusion: SATA II does not mean 3Gb/s

The term SATA II has grown in popularity as the moniker for the SATA 3Gb/s data transfer rate, causing great confusion with customers because, quite simply, it’s a misnomer.

The first step toward a better understanding of SATA is to know that SATA II is not the brand name for SATA’s 3Gb/s data transfer rate, but the name of the organization formed to author the SATA specifications. The group has since changed names, to the Serial ATA International Organization, or SATA-IO.

The 3Gb/s capability is just one of many defined by the former SATA II committee, but because it is among the most prominent features, 3Gb/s has become synonymous with SATA II. Hence, the source of the confusion.

It is NOT so much that people are "confusing the two" but rather that the NEW group formed in July of 2004 chose to abandon the press assumptions and alter the "assumed" name to be.

Just because they created a NEW GROUP, likely for some legal/business reason, didn't mean they had to scrap the naming convention that was created by the previous group. It is the NEW GROUP that chose to "through a monkey into the wrench" of SATA.

But, if nothing else the "FIRST TASK" of the new group has been to "clear up confusion that they created"?

I do hope that this is NOT setting an ill-precedent for SATA!

They should have just stuck with the "SATA II" monicker, and made it the brand name as well.

Hence, no confusion...

Because all hardware that supports SATAII supports 3gb, and all hardware that supports 3gb is SATAII.

Why do people confuse AGP8x with AGP 3.0? Same deal, 8x goes with the 3.0 package.

The "New Group" is the "Serial ATA International Organization". (Their official nic is "SATA-IO".)

In theory, instead of a "temporary committee" to design and begin implementation on the standard they created this is supposed to be a "longterm standards body" that will push the new "SATA 3gb/s standard" and all subsequent "SATA standards" whatever they will be officially called.

The previous group "The SATA II committee" has been dissolved, and the "New Group" has supplanted them and absorbed pretty much all that they were.

Come-on Crashman,

Even you must acknowledge that pretty much "EVERYONE" expected the "SATA II standard" to be officially called just that. After the name of the committee that hammered out the standard, in the same way the previous committee did.

We, the community, have had THOUSANDS of pages of text with that assumption and now they have chosen some other name.

It just kind of strikes me as adding a kink that didn't need to be there, and perhaps even a bit petty. (Maybe the "Serial-IO" group was "flexing their control muscles" in the name choice? That's where the potential "petty" part came in.)

I am only commenting "negatively" on the name thing, and am pointing out that they, "The Serial ATA International Organization", is making a pretty big PR point to "clear up confusion" that they solely created! (At least back when the "SATA II Committee" existed they didn't seem to view any confusion, but maybe they just hadn't gotten around to it.)

Currently I have been waiting for this addition to the standard for some time, and will implement it in fairly short order once it is available.
