I recently purchased an hp 4030 notebook with 512 DDR SDRAM. I was interested in upgrading this notebook to 1 gig of memory. However, I am getting conflicting advice on the following:

cost. I have been told it will cost me an additional $400 to have this installed this seems high. There are two slots available so I need 512megs per slot
installation: How does one install this memory? Is it something that is easy enough to do without tools, etc. Or should I have a professional install this?
type of memory: what are the specs for the memory that should be used in this computer?

thanks for your help

I haven't installed memory in that particular laptop, but I've done it in several gateway and dell notebooks and it's pretty easy.

I hope this helps

Nothing is as easy as it looks

It's a good bet that your system currently has two sticks of 256MB DDR memory.

$400 for two sticks of 512MB is a little far-fetched. However, notebook memory is normally more expensive than desktop memory.

You should be able to find 512MB DDR for under $100 a stick.
You can check pricewatch.com for notebook memory.

Best to buy from a reputable vendor:
Crucial, Kingston, Corsair, NewEgg etc..
