Does anyone out there have any good methods for creating bitz such as purity
seals, IG crests, banner ribbon, etc.? I like to add these to different
miniatures/vehicles to spruce them up a bit, but I dont want to pay 7 or 9
bucks for a sprue that only contains one or two things I want.

Help?

PS: By banner ribbon, I mean the thing that looks like, well, a piece of
beat up ribbon thats been folded at the ends. One of the new Vet Sgts has it
plastered on his chest, and you can also find it in the Predator set.

Well, for the actual purity seals, folks typically create them out
of two part epoxy putty of various sorts. 'Green Stuff' being the most
commonly referenced of the bunch. It's also sold under various other
trade names - like plumbers epoxy, etc and comes in a long thin strip
with blue and white, blue and yellow, which you kneed together to form
the self-hardening putty. The stuff I'm using and particularly liking is
called 'magic sculpt' and can be found at the website of the same name.
You can sculpt both the seal and the ribbon as a single part with a bit
of practice, or if you're feeling particularly creative you can take an
tiny strip of parchment paper and make the ribbon portion (just kind of
crumple and crinkle it a bit first before attaching it to the seal if
you want a worn look to it). If you need help with the actual sculpting
- you can ask here, or on the Yahoo group dealing with the same.

Hope that helps,

Myrmidon

More specifically, head over the the WarMachine site and check out their
article on "Green Stuff Casting". It's pretty good stuff!

Trusting the new google again... o_O

My advice is don't bother. Unless you're severely strapped for cash
it's waaay easier just to spend an extra few bucks per tank, or per
model to get them to look the way you want. Mooch as much as possible.
Hit up yer friends that play SM for their purity seals. Aside from that
you can cast small detailed things like what you describe out of green
stuff putty. Simply place a piece of it over what you want to copy to
make a simple push mold, and let it dry. Then push a new piece of gsp
in your new mold. Simple. For things like SM banners you don't really
need to, the new SM vets have a molded banner pole you can bits order.
Look up the Epic range, there a metal sprue that has several large
purity seals. Also look up the ravenwing landspeeder commander, Master
of the Ravenwing and use his book. Also consider the flame pots from
the Black Coach and scrollwork from like a zillion different models.
The GWUK site has a search engine that should help.

As far as expensive... 1 word... E Bay!

Also, you can get it much and I mean MUCHO cheaper by going through a
middleman... My local shop sold it to me for wholesale plus 3% (ie. $155). you
NEVER buy direct! duh!
how many of you looked at the Factory Suggested Retail Price of a new car?
did you pay that?
If you're worth your Wargear, you paid Dealer's invoice plus 5%.

That's my rant for today... thank you
I hope you learned something...

Go through a distributor for a way better price than FW charges.

I got mine at wholesale + 3%, maybe it's because the shop owner is a friend and
fellow gamer, but at $150 I didn't go wrong.

as to the form of the model, compare it with the epic stuff, looks pretty damn
close to what GW had in mind.

Besides, what else are you gonna use? I know.... expletive deleted
