Hey there!

I just upgraded my Ram from 3 sticks of 256 mb 2700 to 2 sticks of 1gb 3200.

Now My Mobo ( asus A7v8X-X ) supports 400mb fsb so after installing I have raised the fsb accordingly and altereld the CPU multiplier to give 2200 mhz.

My CPU is a athlon xp 2800+ ( so far as I am aware, they are rated at 2.25 ghz ).

Upon booting with this setup, the system seems juddery and when trying to load programs ( Star wars galaxies and WoW are the main culprits ) I get crashes as soon as it tried to load the main game screes.

SWG just crashes out and WoW Gives an error saying that the Cursor has tried to load in a unidentifiable memory address.

I went back to the Bios and kept the fsb at 400 but clocked down to 1800 mhz and its stable, speedy and runs the above mentioned games.

Any ideas as to why I have problems with the CPU running at its rated MHZ?

System =

asus A7v8X-X
Geforce 6800 256mb
SB live player 1024
400 mhz PSU
Athlon XP 2800+
2 gig 3200 DDR non ecc

thansk in advance!

Set FSB to 333 and set the multiplier to 10x, how does that work? BTW, your processor is rated for 2.08GHz, not 2.25. Also, there's not much of a chance of that RAM clocking much faster than DDR400.

Maxtor disgraces the six letters that make Matrox.

I have an AMD XP 2800+ running World of Warcraft.

For some reason, the game does not run smooth on this system.

Also, WOW works best with the latest NVIDIA drivers: 71.89

If you have the wrong driver, WOW will not load at all. Happened to me already. Seems there is no problem with 71.89.

Also, WOW works best with SP2.

You can try to run MEMTEST86 on you new memory setup.

Also, what brand of memory are you using?

its unbranded stuff from scan... V budget but still shoudl work ok...

as I say, its working ok at 133FSB and 17 x multiplier with 400 mhz memory... But is this cripling the system with these settings?

AMD Athlon XP 2800+ can run about 2GHz. (2.2GHz should also be ok too.)

The A7v8X-X will run PC-3200 memory at PC-2100 (DDR-266) with the FSB rated at 133MHz.

With the 17x multiplier, your CPU is at about 2.3GHz. This may possibly be a little too high. You might want to try 15x to 16x with a 133 bus.

Also, what happens if you increase the bus to 166 ? In this case 12.5x is more suitable for your CPU. And the memory will run at DDR-333.

Your memory is not crippling the system. In anycase, the memory is too good for your system. Your motherboard running at 133MHZ is the weakest link.
