I thought of that but it would be a waste as she wouldn't be able to fly
with the Guards. So maybe I'll be buying some wings with the next month's
allowance...

I guess I'll put my month 2 stuff here, since the threads seem to be
exploding everywhere. This is a little different from when I accidentally
posted it during month 1: I had priced the Cadian Heavy box $2 too low, and
I discovered that Army Builder was using the wrong point values on the LatD
Arch Heretic. Still, it's basically the same as before.

Lost and the Damned army, month 2:

Month 2:
$50 budget
-$3.50 debt from month 1
another Cadian box: -$30
a single Cadian Hvy Weapons box: -$12
1 blister + 1 special order Cadian Officers (to get specific weapons
fit): -$15.50
-$1.00 debt
--
These, combined with the 5 Cadians I saved from week one, will let me field
3 Traitor units, all led by Agitators and with 2 man heavy weapons teams.

Arch Heretic w/ Mark of Nurgle, Bolter, Plague Sword, Nurgle's Rot - 87pts
Big Mutants x3, with 1 Hvy Stubber - 140pts
-- Big Boss Mutant w/ Hvy Stubber
Allied Plague Marines (elite)x5, w/ Bolters, 1 PG - 105 pts
Traitor Troops (compulsory ) x14, w/ Lasguns, 1 GL, 1 ML team - 170pts
--Agitator w/ Power Fist, laspistol
Traitor Troops x14, w/ Lasguns, 1 GL, 1 AC team - 170pts
--Agitator w/ Power Fist, laspistol
Traitor Troops x14, w/ Lasguns, 1 GL, 1 Mortar team - 165pts
--Agitator w/ Power Weapon, laspistol
Plague Zombies x18 - 162pts
999 pts, 73 models + 2 "spare" zombies

Thematically, it's a simple extension from month one. The Death Guard
Arch-heretic has been able to convert two more units of Traitor Guard to add
to the initial unit of turncoats who pledged themselves to serve him. The
new arrivals have also managed to liberate some squad heavy weapons from the
loyalist armories, while Agitators have arisen from the ranks to replace
their slaughtered Commisars and Priests. The Plague Zombies he created upon
arrival are still with him, as are the Big Mutants, who were among the first
mortals on the planet to turn to Grandfather Nurgle. And now that the
Arch-Heretic's influence has spread, a small group of Plague Marines has
come from the Eye of Terror to support his attempt to corrupt this world...

From a force selection point of view, I've taken the very un-WD view of
trying to expand from a 500 point skirmish force to a larger, sorta-balanced
1000 point army. Since the whole point of this army is to be a giant horde
of traitors and shambling plague-carriers, I figured to go with more
Traitors. I bought a single heavy weapons box, and with components I saved
from month 1 and parts from the second Cadian Shock Troop box I purchased
this turn, I should be able to construct 3 acceptable-looking heavy weapons
teams, one for each Traitor unit. The Agitators with their PWs or PFs might
not wind up being all that useful, but I felt they were thematic, and I
guess having some h2h hidden in these 15-strong units couldn't hurt. I
added Nurgle's Rot to the Arch-Heretic because it's _very_ thematic
(implying that his connection to Granddaddy Nurgle is growing), makes him a
bit more unpleasant to be around, and neatly brings the point value of my
army just under the 1000 point ceiling. And I had the 5-strong unit of
Plague Marines already lying around from month one - I just thought it was a
better storyline if they show up after the one lone Death Guard hero gets a
foothold on this poor unfortunate planet, plus I couldn't fit them in under
the 500 point ceiling I set for the first month's list.

At this point I have more than doubled the model count in my army (from a
corrected month 1 total of 36 minis to 73 in month 2) and stepped neatly up
from a 500 pt roster to a 1000 pt roster. One of the design criteria I've
set for myself is to try and smoothly move between the "traditional" point
totals. Month 3 looks like it'll be 1250, which isn't a number I hear
thrown around alot, but it's right between the common 1000 and 1500 totals.

The two main choices I'm looking at for Month 3 will make a big impact on
how the army develops, but since current feedback seems to indicate there's
no good cheap way to field "normal" looking Rough Riders from GW plastics, I
may very well be taking an extreme step and making up my own mutated RR
stand-ins. As a pure thought experiment this is an uncontroversial step,
but my problem is that I find this army is growing more and more interesting
to me, and I'm currently in the fortunate position of being able to consider
actually buying the army I'm planning out here. When month 3 arrives, I'll
let you all know what the decision is and how I think I'll implement it (if
any of you are consumed by curiosity and can't wait, I discuss it in my
recent thread about converting RRs).

This whole thing is pretty fun, although I might not be appreciating all of
it since I don't read White Dwarf. From everyone's comments and Philip's WD
reviews, it sounds like the guiding principle behind the "official" Tale of
Four Gamers way to grow an army is to buy undersized, overcosted (in either
points or cash) units that don't work well together, then spend most of the
following months' budgets on bitz to trick out a relatively useless special
character. Is that the case? Should I devote month 3's $50US on buying
nurglings and skulls to glue to my Arch-Heretic's base and one $25, 20 point
Chaos Spawn?

Month 2 already, huh? Suppose I'd better get on with it then.

As of the end of month 1, I had managed to put a legal (albeit imaginary)
army on the board, with an Inquisitor with 3 warriors as henchmen, 7
Stormtroopers including a flamer, and 5 Power armoured Grey Knights
including Justicar and Incinerator, and £6 spare. I've not got around to
buying a DH codex yet though, so I can't give you values, but its about 300
or so points.

Its tempting to just buy a box of GK Termies for this month's options, but
my troops squads are looking fairly minimal so they need a size boost before
I'll be happy with them, so this month its more Stormies for me:
http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.uk?do=Individual&code=99060105
137&orignav=10
I'll grab another 2 blisters at £6 each, and 2 meltaguns at £3 each:
http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.uk?do=Individual&code=99060105
182&orignav=10

That gives me a total of 15 Stormtroopers, which I can split into a full 10
man anti-infantry squad with the flamer and massed hellguns, and a minimal 5
trooper squad with the meltaguns to make a nuisance of themselves trying to
hunt tanks and giving heavy infantry something to think about. The full
squad may get a transport later.

Not to neglect the Grey Knights, my final purchase will be to boost their
squad with an extra blister of troopers, with enough Stormbolter fire I
think I can make up for the disgustingly expensive psycannon model I wanted
in here instead of the Incinerator:
http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.uk?do=Individual&code=99060107
011&orignav=10
That's another £6, so I've actually saved another £1 this month (eventually
I'll realise there's no point saving up imaginary money, I guess), bought my
total up to a more respectable 3 troops choices and 26 models. But its all
been a bit boring so far, I know, all troops choices and a mimimal HQ. Next
month I think it'll be time to start throwing in more exciting shiny things.

Necrons, Month 2:

Before I start, I'd like to thank Mr. Bowles; Thanks to your info, I was
able to set my Dark Eldar friend straight about a thing or two.

I started this month by buying some Immortals. On paper, they look very
good, and I like the minis too. I hope they can pull their weight on the
battlefield, because they are stupidly expensive (in $$$). They are also a
giant pain in the rear to assemble.

$10 Leftover

$50 Monthly Allowance

-----

$60 Total

-$60 6 Necron Immortals

-----

$0 Leftover

Here's my purchases to-date:

360 20 Necron Warriors @ 18 pts each

150 3 Necron Destroyers @ 50 pts each

60 5 Scarab Swarms @ 12 pts each

168 6 Necron Immortals @ 28 pts each

100 1 Necron Lord @100 pts

-----

838 Total

Easily enough for a 750 pt game, but a even with wargear its a bit of a
stretch for a 1000 pt game.

The rest of my army is progressing nicely. Thanks to the sixteen inches of
snow we recieved right before Christmas, I was stuck inside for several
days. I managed to paint up all of my original purchases! After basecoating
them in Chainmail last month, I gave them a very heavy wash with
thinned-down Chaos Black, then drybrushed them back up to Chainmail. I
touched up their guns with Chaos Black, and painted the power conduits on
them Snot Green. I tried painting their eyes Snot Green, but I felt it
wasn't visible enough, so I switched to Blood Red. The Destroyers got their
little half-masks painted Space Wolves Grey, and then a second coat of Skull
White. I then based them all (except the Destroyers, didn't want to mess
with the flying bases) by brushing slightly thinned Elmer's glue onto the
bases and dipping them into sand, then putting a coat of thinned Elmer's on
top to hold the sand. The bases then got painted Codex Grey, and I then
washed them with thinned Chaos Black. After that, I drybrushed the bases
with a Codex Grey / Skull White mix. After little touch-up here, I put the
green rods in, and they were finished!

This weekend, I played another game, 1000 pts against the Dark Eldar.

180 10 Necron Warriors @ 18 pts each (required)

180 10 Necron Warriors @ 18 pts each (required)

60 5 Scarab Swarms @ 12 pts each

20 ** Disruption Fields @ 4 pts each

150 3 Necron Destroyers @ 50 pts each

168 6 Necron Immortals @ 28 pts each

18 ** Disruption Fields @ 3 pts each

100 Necron Lord (required)

60 ** Veil of Darkness

40 ** Resurrection Orb

10 ** Warscythe

This game was complete slaughter. His jetbikes popped up over a hill; my
destroyers obliterated them in one turn of shooting. I tied up his heavy
weapons with my scarabs while the rest of my army shot his to pieces. Only a
handful of his figures were able to close to hand-to-hand range, and I used
my Veil of Darkness to get out of combat when I could. By turn five, he was
down to three models, and I had over thirty left. Then I lost. One of the
models he had left was his Talos, which got into hand-to-hand with one of my
Warrior units, and chewed them to pieces. The other two models he had were
the remainders of his command squad - his commander and one Incubus. They
got into hand-to-hand with my other warrior unit. Again, the Necrons put up
little fight. Once the two Warrior units were out of the way, I was down to
only eight models. A round of shooting from the Talos lowered me to six, I
failed the "We'll Be Back" roll for both of them, and the remainder of my
army instantly phased out.

What did I do wrong? Well, first I didn't protect my Warriors well enough. I
used the VoD to move my Lord & Immortals out of danger, but exposed the
Warrior unit, which was really bad, since it caused my phase-out. If instead
of fleeing with the Lord, I had charged in with the Warriors - I might have
scored a few more wounds, which would have finished his Incubus & Commander.
Second, I didn't have any true heavy weapons. I figured I didn't need them,
as all Gauss weapons have always score a glancing hit against armor on a
roll of '6' (same with the Disruptor Fields in hand-to-hand). Unfortunately,
the Talos doesn't work like a vehicle. With T7, 3 wounds, and a 3+ save, I
had a really tough time damaging it. My Destroyers fired on it for 3 turns
and unluckily only managed to cause one wound total. So I may be purchasing
some Heavy Destroyers in the upcoming months, an unit I initially discounted
as not-very-useful.
