Is their an FTP bug in WinXP Home?

I am switching to a new computer. I can access my ftp site anonymously. I
cannot access the site using a password. The identical software configured
in an identical way on my old computer (still connected to the my network
and to the Internet) works just fine. It is as if XP is corrupting the
password I type in. FTP site acts as if it is getting a wrong password.
Thinking it might be the FTP software, I downloaded and installed another
FTP client with the same results. I've Googled the subject and find lots of
similar complaints but no suggestions of what might be happening. Anyone
able to shed light on this?
