New Ram Post Failure

Today I installed a new pair of 1G each Corsair XMS sticks into my Asus A7N8X mobo. The sticks are CMX1024-3200PRO 400MHz "Twin X" from the Corsair Pro series. Upon powering up, I get the aural "Memory test failed" post, then the system hangs and won't boot. I pull one stick out and it boots fine with no post errors. I've swapped out the new sticks in the single configuration to eliminate the possibility of a bad stick from the factory. The old RAM is two 512Mb sticks of Geil PC3200 DDR400 and they work fine. The BIOS settings are, to my knowledge, default and there's no overclocking, etc...

Any ideas what I'm missing here? Thanks.

System Specs:
Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo
AMD Athlon 3000+ Barton
Old RAM: Geil PC3200 DDR400, 512Mbx2
New RAM: Corsair CMX1024-3200PRO 400MHz Pro Series, 1Gbx2
Windows XP Home SP2

You might have to set the timimgs and FSB manually in the BIOS.

I had to do that to my mobo otherwise it wouldn't get past the POST screen. Just hung there.

I got it to work by doing just that. I manually set the timings and now it works. But...while messing around with other settings, I ended up with the same default settings that were keeping me from booting and now they work fine too. Go figure...

I must tell you that the A7N8X series of motherboards has alot of problems with many memory modules. Seriously, I have a list.

The main issue with this board is the latency timings. This board supports DDR-333 under CL2.5, and the DDR-400 modules are possibly CL3 which is a problem for this board.

You can try to change the values manually in the motherboard BIOS to CL2.5. But in some of the cases, certain modules won't work at all with this board.

The RAM that run stable is listed in the ASUS site. The one he bought is one of them.

Manually setting the RAM timings worked for me so I suggested it to him.

I had an ASUS and there were a lot of complaints in the reviews that it only worked properly with RAM from the qualified list. I got some cheap Kingmax RAM that was on the list and it worked great.
