[40k] Proposed Necron Revisions

This may be a Minority Opinion, but it's been my experience that the Necron
List presented in Codex Necron is slightly underpowered in the current 4th
Edition landscape. While they're still better off than Nids, Orks, or Eldar,
those Codices are so hopelessely out of date as to require a complete
overhaul, while the Necrons will only require minor tweaks to became a far
more interesting, balanced, and fun to both play with or against. To that
end, I have a small list of Revisions to current Units, and then a list of
Traditions that will change the entire feel of an army.

Obviously these are untested and pretty much a rough draft. If anybody has
any comments or can name an over/under powered unit that needs revision, let
me know. Other than that, here's my proposal:

Traditions:

The Necrontyr were an ancient and warlike people, with a proud martial
history. Within that history, there were many differing approaches to the
art of war. Several of these styles have survived the transition from flesh
to metal. Any Necron Army may select ONE of the following Traditions. Units
that are restricted may not be taken in armies with that tradition.

Corsairs: Destroyers may be selected as Elites, all Lords must be have the
Destroyer Body upgrade, and no lord may purchase the Veil of Darkness.
Restricted Units: Tomb Spider, Flayed Ones.

Travelers: Any Necron Unit may be upgraded to Deep Strike for +20 pts a
squad. Restricted Units: Monolith, Pariahs.

Defenders: Flayed Ones may be purchased as Troops choices; the number of
Flayed Ones may not exceed the number of Troops choices. Necron Lords may
upgrade their Staff of Light to a Power Weapon and a Close Combat Weapon for
free. Restricted Units: Scarab Swarms, Heavy Destroyers

Ancients: Tomb Spiders may purchase a Resurrection Orb for +40 points.
Restricted Units: Monolith & Destroyers

Hierophants: All units count towards the armies Phase Out number, not only
those with the Necron Rule. Note that they do not gain We'll Be Back.
Pariahs are no longer 0-1. Restricted Units: Flayed Ones, Immortals.

Zealots: Immortals may be selected as Troops. All units in the army have the
Scout special Rule. Restricted Units: Pariahs, Scarab Swarms, Monoliths,
Tomb Spiders, Necron Lords.

Recommend Changes:

The following alterations are an attempt to fix some of the less balanced
units for the Necrons:

Pariahs: Have a 5+ Invulnerable Save in addition to their normal save and
cost

Wraiths: Squad size is now 1-5.

Heavy Destroyers: May self repair as long as there is another Destroyer or
Heavy Destroyer within 6".

Monolith: If two or more Monoliths are selected on the same Force
Organization Chart, they both lose the Living Metal rule.

I don't care much for the traditions; I don't think that kind of variation
in tactics fits with the flavor of legions of indistinguishable robots.

The other suggestions, on the other hand, are pretty good. I especially like
the increased squad size for Wraiths.

The Wraith squad size is a common complaint among Necron players, and is
really the only reason the unit isn't used more often.

As for the Traditions, I was looking for new ways for the list to be played.
I think that the real reason people don't like Necrons is that they aren't
any fun to play against. Every army sits there with a ton of models and
tries not to die, marches slowly towards you, and phases out on turn 5. I
wanted the Traditions to open new tactical avenues and make the army play a
little more dynamically.

As for the fluff, the Necrons were'nt alsways robots. They used to be
warrios just like anything else. Think of it this way: Dreadnoughts have
dozens of options and varying battlefield uses, they're just dead guys in a
walking coffin of doom. Most of the Traditions simply alter what your list
may take, and that represents your Lord's personal tastes, something that
clearly survived the change (or else there would be no War Scythe vs. Staff
of Light debate.) the Traditions, i admit, were a reach. They make the
list better and stronger, but I really hope none of them are abusive, rules
wise.

I've got a good way to revise the Necron Codex... it involves matches and a
liberal squirt of light fluid.

I find that hard to believe.

If I were to adjust Necrons, I'd make the WBB a 5+ test.

I don't think the monoliths change:

Should be done, that is the ONLY! reason that i get monoliths, i like the traditions though :)
