AMD needs a socket change for DDR2, but IMO that will happen until next year.
And AMD is better for gaming, and as a bonus is cheaper.
Just make sure to get a socket 939 mobo.

For gaming, AMD systems have an edge over Intel in the Enthusiast market. And AMD systems are all using DDR at the moment.

On another note:
It was the case before that DDR2 was much more expensive than DDR.

It just isn't the case right now.

DDR2 prices have dropped considerably in the spot market. And even now it is possible to find deals on major DDR2 modules near the price of DDR.

Many other brands of DDR2 including Aeneon and Elixir are already below the price of their DDR counterparts. This trend will likely continue as sources quote there will be a shortage of DDR modules during the second half of this year as makers switch production away from DDR to new products such as flash and DDR2.
