Hi. I've been searching for a nice desktop replacement laptop, but I need some help, and please don't flame me for wanting a laptop like this:

- My budget would be about (1600~2100) U.S. dollars. But if it is financed it would be alot better. For example, at Sager the laptop I want is at about 2100, perfect in my opinion, but no financing so that drops me back a bit, on the other hand, at Dell with a 260m instead of a 280m its the same price but with financing (I can pay it slowly).

- If the laptop is either 15 inches and above its ok, although 15 is more portable (though I don't really mind) and the resolution about 1400*900 (I think thats a resolution?!) and up. I don't care if its heavy or if it does'nt have 3 hours of battery life. I love playing games, watching movies and I also use it for work. Games I play are COD 4, Risen, WOW, Far Cry 2, Batman (new one), Fallout 3. About everything. I am conscious that an Nvidia 260 or 280 is not at all the same as a desktop one and the processors too, so I am comfortable with medium settings on gameplay. About storage if its more than 200GB its fine although it needs to be at 7,200 Rpm.

- I have been considering site like Sager, Dell, Xoticpc, etc.

- I plan on having a laptop that can game good for like 2 years or more.

- I don't need BluRay. DVD I do.

- I prefer Dell or Sager. I don't know about those boutique stores like Ibuypower and Cyberpowerpc, I've heard bad comments. (But if you think otherwise state the facts please, lol)

- I live in Dominican Republic, but have a shipping address in Florida.

- The build I like is a laptop with the new i7 processors, researched and loved it (except the extreme one, too expensive), I don't what to choose though (thats why I am here) for example in Dell: between i7 at 1.6 with Solid State Drive or 1.73 with normal HDD. Also with an Nvidia 260, 280 or equivalent.

Thanks in advance.

Alright, you are looking at the Alienware M15x and either the Sager NP8690 or the 8760. As far as performance goes, the GTX 280Ms in the Sagers are going to be better for games (about a 10% increase). However, I do agree that $2100 is a fair chunk of money. If it comes down to being able to pay for the system, I would say just go with the Alienware (omg, what just came out of my mouth?).

As far as other laptops go, you've picked just about the best of the best. Both CyberPower and IBuyPower use systems that are built off the same chasis that the Sager's use, but their support is just god awful and aren't worth it.

Asus also has a system that is very similar to the Alienware, for a bit less money: http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-g51ja1 [...] figure=yes

Yeah, thats exactly what I was thinking. But is Alienware really bad? Also the Asus you recommended with the i7 at 1.6 and Nvidia 260 is less than 1500 dollars! tempting... I would like to know the difference between 1.6 and 1.73 and if both of them are good at gaming at all.

Thanks alot for the post.

Still would like to hear more though.

Bad in what sense? The laptop will perform well, I just don't like the company that much.

The i7 CPUs have a feature that is similar to the Turbo Boost on the desktop chips, so depending on how your application/game loads the cores your CPU can clock up to 2.8ghz (for the base i7 720QM). The difference between the 720QM and 820QM is going to be at most .26ghz, so not terribly huge.

Anandtech did a review of the 920XM, which should give you an idea of how the others will perform in games: http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/sh [...] i=3647&p=7
