[WFB] [40k] A Tale of RGMW Gamers - Month 3

Trying again to compile everything into one thread as we go along...

Looking at my original list and comparing it with what I have so far, I've now
added all the characters my army is likely to need and most of the Core troops.
It's tempting at this stage to branch out into something more exotic - the
Hydra Banner would certainly benefit from having more than the general and some
spearmen to boost and adding the second RBT is tempting. However, the army I
currently have looks less than balanced and the sorceress seems rather exposed
on her horse. It is therefore obvious that this army is in desperate need of
Mengil's Manflayers.

What's that? Horsies? I've said I'd get Dark Riders every month for the last
two months? This is a Tale of *RGMW* Gamers, after all... Mengil's lads it is.
I've decided that what I need is a unit that can't be joined by the Battle
Standard Bearer (who isn't a scout), that won't do anything to make the
sorceress less vulnerable and that represents a huge point sink. And be fair -
you can't deny these are great models.

I've got £5 left after this as well as 50p from the previous month, so I can
get a unit of 6 Dark Riders next month anyway. After all, what else would I
buy?

Month 3

Mengil Manhide's Manflayers £20

Saved £5.50

Hah! 382pts for £20. Beat that, Borman! Mengil has decided to throw in his lot
with Hellebron for the time being, insofar as he retains any vestiges of
loyalty to the Dark Elves at all, lured by the promise that the force will soon
be on its way to kill things. He aso reckons that he'll be able to do the
lion's share of the killing while the rest of the army sits around or lumbers
foward slowly.

Kourzan of Hag Graef, Dark Elf Noble: General. Great weapon, heavy armour, Sea
Dragon Cloak.
Melkhen the Black, Dark Elf Noble: Battle Standard Bearer (Hydra Banner). Hand
weapon, heavy armour.
Hekate, Dark Elf Sorceress: Level 2. Dispel Magic Scroll, Seal of Ghrond, hand
weapon, Dark Steed.

30 Dark Elf Warriors: Spear, hand weapon, light armour, shield. Champion,
standard, musician.
16 Dark Elf Warriors: Repeater crossbow, hand weapon, light armour
Mengil Manhide: Great weapon, hand weapon, repeater crossbow pistol, heavy
armour.
9 Manflayers: Great weapon, hand weapon, repeater crossbow, heavy armour.
Reaper bolt thrower: 2 crew with hand weapons and light armour.

Total: 1,380pts

Ok, I'll repost my month 3 now:

Purchases:
Chaos rino 15
Plague marine box 18
2 pounds over the allowance

800 point list:
HQ - lieutenant 45
MoN, termi armour, great weapon, mutation 53

T - 6 plague marines, 2x plasma 134
AC, p fist 34
7x infiltration 21

T - 6 plague marines, 2x plasma 134
AC 19
7x infiltration 21

T - 6 plague marines, 2x melta 134
AC, p fist 34
rhino, armour, smoke 58

T - 7 plague bearers 112

Sum 799

Now the raptor assault sprues and accessory sprues I got in month 2
have come to use. Still not enough points to upgrade the great weapon
to a manreaper.

A lieutenant/lord who is not wearing terminator armour would be a much
better idea. Then he could get infiltration and join one of the
infiltrationg units in gamma and omega level missions. Or, in alfa and
gamma missions, join the squad in the rhino. With terminator armour
neither option is open. Too bad the Typhus model is too good to
resist :-/

Hey, Phil, I was poring through google groups to see what the forces looked
like on the WFB side of things, and making the armies as best I could in
Armybuilder: Here's what I have so far, just wanted to touch base and see if
this matched your info

Chris Valera (Bretonnians): Up to Month 3, 735pts, AB validation says:
*Army Battle Standard Bearer required to be in army.
* You require at least one unit of Knights of the Realm.
*Army must have one General.
* Units of type 'Lord' exceed maximum model count (0).

Christof (Lizardmen) : Up to Month 3, 1149pts, passes AB validation

Craig Little (Tomb Kings): Up to Month 3, 1368pts, passes AB validation

Desert Lurker (High Elves): Up to Month 2, 910pts, passes AB validation

Donovan Borman (Dogs of War): Up to Month 2(?), 1147pts, passes AB
validation

Estarriol (High Elves): Up to Month 3, 1375pts, passes AB validation

Ewok (Wood Elves): Up to Month 3, 924pts, passes AB validation

P Bowles (Dark Elves): Up to Month 3, 1375pts, AB validation says:
* Composition Group Rare does not satisfy requirements (<= 1 unit)

Sam Campbell (Cult of Slaanesh): Up to Month 3, 1164pts, AB validation says:
* Units of type 'Lord' exceed maximum model count (0).

That leaves Donovan & Desert Lurker as yet to post a month 3 update, and
Sam, Phil & Chris V as invalid [according to AB] armies.

As to the points race:

Estarriol 1375
P Bowles 1375
Craig 1368
Sam Campbell 1164
Christof 1149
Donovan Borman 1147
Ewok 924
Desert Lurker 910
Chris Valera 735

We have a tie, with myself rapidly closing in.

That match your info, Phil?

Hadn't pointed this one yet, not least because I don't have the Bret army book
- thanks for that. Have I added the Month 3 listing yet? From my records Chris
is down for the third Dark Pegasus, the Green Knight and 8 KotR this month.

>* Units of type 'Lord' exceed maximum model count (0).

No idea what this means.

>Christof (Lizardmen) : Up to Month 3, 1149pts, passes AB validation

Haven't pointed it with the latest additions - Christof hasn't indicated
whether his Saurus have spears or hand weapons, or what his Scar-Veteran's
equipped with.

>Craig Little (Tomb Kings): Up to Month 3, 1368pts, passes AB validation

It's down as 1,353pts using the list you included for this month.

>Desert Lurker (High Elves): Up to Month 2, 910pts, passes AB validation

928pts - is this me, or is it Army Builder?

>Donovan Borman (Dogs of War): Up to Month 2(?), 1147pts, passes AB

Yep, month 2 - again my points work out differently, to 1,228pts.

>Estarriol (High Elves): Up to Month 3, 1375pts, passes AB validation

1,382. :)

>Ewok (Wood Elves): Up to Month 3, 924pts, passes AB validation

956...

>P Bowles (Dark Elves): Up to Month 3, 1375pts, AB validation says:

1,380pts, but it's the closest yet. :)

>* Composition Group Rare does not satisfy requirements (<= 1 unit)

What the devil does this mean? I've only got one Rare - or doesn't Army Builder
realise that Mengil & Co. are Special in a Dark Elf army?

>Sam Campbell (Cult of Slaanesh): Up to Month 3, 1164pts, AB validation says:
>* Units of type 'Lord' exceed maximum model count (0).

*Checks book*. This is true.

>That leaves Donovan & Desert Lurker as yet to post a month 3 update, and

Bloody computers... Sam's got a Lord he can't use until he gets to 2,000pts and
Chris doesn't have a battle standard bearer, but that's it after month 3. It
does seem to be only Donovan and Desert Lurker still to post month 3 - there's
been a pretty quick response to that.

Close enough - with estarriol in particular I might have included the odd
option for his units (since he doesn't have the book - I think I've now updated
his Silver Helms with plausible, rather than minimum, equipment). The others
are only out by a few points, for whatever reason. Thanks for that.

Oops, missed out on the KOTR for him here. And he has <2000pts and the Green
Knight, who counts as a 'Lord' so that's what that means. Adjusted for KOTR
he has 951 points.

I just gave them as minimum equipment (ie. hand weapons or nothing) for now,
figured I'd update when more info was available.

I forgot to include the Vambraces of the Sun for my Tomb Prince, which is
the 15pt discrepancy.

I don't know, in AB I have
Commander: Pure of Heart, Sword of Might, Dragonscale Shield, Heavy Armour,
Elf Steed, Ilthimar Barding: 126

21 SpearElves, including full Command 261

11 SpearElves, including full command 151

16 Archers, including Captain 204

12 Swordmasters including Bladelord 168

I think the discrepancy would be Standard and Musician for the Archers

If I add full command to both Duellists, and Marksmen to both Crossbowmen, I
get 1227

I added a Musician to the silver Helms to get to 1382

The issue here is that his glade gurdian has both the 25-pt Amber amulet and
the 30pt Hail of Doom Arrow in his list (though he has the HoDA listed as
25pts) and that exceeds the Glade Guardian's Magic Item points allotment.

Adding a musician to the Crossbow warriors gives me 1,380, and apparently,
AB, doesn't realise that Mengil should be special (I thought that was the
case.)

For some reason Google snipped the Bret part of the post. Oh, well, in
reply I'm assuming the Green Knight is a Hero-level general (Paladin?)
until the army gets bigger.

Christof muttered about wanting heroes with dispel dice, so the
Scar-Veteran should probably have the Blessed Spawning of Tepok.

Nope, no command in the crossbowmen. Another to recalculate (I got it
wrong once before, I remember, in month 1).

Me too, actually, not to mention so many models (even using Empire
plastics for just about everything).

The book is now in my possession, as are the Lord and Mages in RL, all I
have to do now is convery the WoodElf ones to be a bit more High Elf though.

They don't have a musician yet. At the mo they are 8 riders with attached
Lord and Mage. Box 2 will get them standards and musicians etc.

In my defence, well actually not so much in my defence as an
explanation to my stupidity. How the hell was I supposed to know that
there was two different Wood Elves preview lists?

The one I was using, that I downloaded from GW:s website states HoDA
as 25pts. Now there is an entirely different list. Ok! It was a long
time ago that I downloaded my list, but I did expect the preview list
to be a preview list to the army book and not a preview list to the
preview list to the army book. Now I have to check my entire list to
see if there is anything else that is wrong.

OK this is my 3rd time posting this in 3 days. and my First time with
the new google groups interface so who knows what will quote and what
won't. (I had 0 of 3 posts work Monday) and 1 of 3 Posts work
Tuesday)

Well estarriol totally messed up my minth 3 purchases because then my
army would look nearly the same as his. And in a tale of RGMW Gamers
that simply would not do.

I *was* going to buy the semi uninteresting purchase of
8 silverhelm (15) and Mages (8) but now...:

Dragon Princes (5) 25

Left over 0

See my General (good ol' what'shisname) was off doing his shore patorl
duties when he happened upon this group of bored dragon princes. Come
with me, he said, and we can have some great battles worthy of song...
er.. that will impress the court. And so they did. on the hunt for
theoretical battles to fight they encounterd an Unsightly Chaos
warband. Who did not even wear the same colors. Where has Chaos' fasion
sense gone? Thus they chased the warband into the sea. The spears
held the charge after the archers softend the the beastmen for a charge
by the swodmasters and the dragon princes took out the chaos knights.
This theorectial battle would have gone much better the General had
managed to round up some mages... but there is always next month...
Will post new army list to go with this later as it was onthe home
computer and the second time I posted this.
But is is roughly:

Commander, Mounted, hvy armor, Blade of sea gold, Enchanted shield, pure
of heart

1st elves (20) inc full command Lion Standard
2nd elves (12) full command
Archers (16) Full command
Swordmaster 12 full command banner of ellyrion
Dragon Princes (5) Sword of Might, Talisman of Protection
Sounds about rigth.

Quadruple checking with paper and pencil using the Chronicles 2004 I get
1218pts at the end of month 2. (I forgot I'd dropped a 4 pt halberd for the
captain) The crossbowmen and duellists have no command whatsoever, only the
pikemen and cavalry have full command.

The theme of my army is "Budget Rate Avengers" so I'm using the 20% off
retail prices you mentioned in the beginning. If that's a no-no it'll set me
back a bit but not too much. Month 3 for me is posted under [WFB] Tale of...
and it's my smallest (number of models AND points wise) purchase yet. Using
the Empire soldiers and militia boxes for most of my army *including
characters* is what's allowing me to cram so much into so little time and
budget. It worked well with my Empire army, I was able to make awesome
Reiksguard-like foot captains, war machine crews, and convert the odd figure
here and there into a filler for another type of unit using painting and
putty to keep them from being out of place. This saves me from buying a
whole box just to get one or two more guys.

Phil, while researching my original posts I noticed you'd asked how I was
doing the pikemen. While the spearmen from the WHFB box are my favorite and
easiest, the soldiers box is cheaper.

*****Warning: I've converted enough Empire plastics like this it's second
nature to do this whole list of instructions in about 2 minutes per model.
It's still a job requiring concentration and it's taken a lot of "not quite
getting it" to get it (usually). If you want cheap human pikemen that are
EASY get a shitload of the plastic Empire spearmen that come with
handgunners on the same sprue. Use the handgunners as crossbowmen, or pay
the same points and use them as Empire handgunners.*****

Empire Soldier to Mercenary Pikemen
Basically I clip off all the halberd stuff, glue all the models torso to
their lower halves, and glued to a base (offset about 45 degrees from normal
to the models right), when that's done I drill the hands out with a 1mm bit,
then put a steel 1mm pike-length rod through. Then, with the rod keeping the
hands in the right position, I put the arms onto the torso with some
greenstuff, which allows me to position the arms in a properly pikey fashion
(all at 45 degree up and slightly to the models left side works well ranking
up as well as visually). Then I let it set, letting the steel wire slide
down to the work surface which helps support the arms while setting. When
the greenstuff is set I drill though the shoulders and pin the arms. Once
assembly is complete I like to leave the pikes free to move though the hands
so I can remove them for transport, the pikes kept from sliding all the way
through by a dab of white glue on the wire where I want it to stop. Pre-cut
steel rods and pike heads can be got from Old Glory. If you take the
REAAAAALLY simple route and use the new plastic Empire spearmen just use the
spearhead, which looks really good with the little fur ringy.
