Hi:

I'm running Windows XP Professional and I'd like to know how I can setup a slave drive.

Thanks.

1.) Read the information on this page.

<A HREF="http://www.jsifaq.com/SUBI/tip4300/rh4363.htm" target="_new">How do I use Disk Management to manage basic and dynamic disks?</A>

You can also use a standard Win9x <A HREF="http://www.mirrors.org/archived_software/www.bootdisk.com/original.htm" target="_new">boot disk</A> with the <A HREF="http://fdisk.radified.com/" target="_new">FDISK</A> utility to partition the drive, or a program like <A HREF="http://www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic/" target="_new">Partition Magic 7.0</A>.

You can format the partitions right from the GUI. After creating the partition(s), In My Computer, each drive letter can be right-clicked, and under Properties, there is a the FORMAT command. Choose the file system, and Windows will do the rest.

2.) As for attaching the drive ... jumper it as a Slave, or Cable Select. Place it on the middle connector of the IDE cable. Boot the system, go into the BIOS, and make sure the drive is correctly identified. Save your settings, reboot into Windows, and partition and format the drive.

If the drive is NOT correctly identified, you may need to flash the BIOS to a new version, or use the hard drive manufacturer's disk utility to partition the drive. If you need this kind of utility, always be sure to download the latest version and extract it onto a freshly formatted and scanned floppy disk.

This will depend entirely on the age of your mainboard and BIOS.

That's about all there is to it.
