Hi everyone.

Im just about to fork out a £1000 on a base unit and plan to build it myself (Tom has been very useful resource).

Just so I dont waste any money please could somebody confirm that the following ram is compatible with the motherboard and also could someone tell me how they came to this conclusion.

RAM
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Corsair_Value_Select.html
Corsair 2GB DDR Value Select PC3200 CAS3.0 Kit (2x1GB) (VS2GBKIT400C3) (MY-080-CS)

MOTHERBOARD
http://tw.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard/Products/Products_GA-K8NXP-SLI.htm
GigaByte K8NXP-SLI, Socket 939, nForce4, SLI Motherboard

IF it is not compatible please could someone tell me why and what is compatible from www.overclockers.co.uk

Thanks in advance!!

Should work no problem.
1st question do you really need 2 gig of ram what do you plan to do with the system.
2nd why the gigabyte board? availability?

Asus P4P800DX, P4C 2.6ghz@3.25ghz, 2X512 OCZ PC4000 3-4-4-8, MSI 6800Ultra stock, 2X30gig Raid0

You shouldn't need more than 1GB of RAM and the DFI Lanparty is a better mobo than the one you have.
The RAM should be fine, but get 1GB of better ram. If it says value select, I don't think it's good for OCing.

Here it goes:

1) 2Gb to play battlefield 2 + I develop games.
2) Im not too bothered about overclocking ram.
3) How much of a difference (when looking at cost) does getting better ram make.
4) Gigabyte motherboard - well its got RAID, Wireless LAN for £100. If you have any other reccomendations for a motherboard then let me know.

You guys have put doubts in my mind about what I should get so can you decide for me.

These are the candidates:

1) £125 Asus A8N-SLI Premium Sck939,PCI-E,SATA,Lan,Snd Motherboard (with no wireless lan so another £30).
2) £110 GigaByte K8NXP-SLI, Socket 939, nForce4, SLI Motherboard
(Only 3 usb ports but ive got a usb card lying around somewhere and its got wireless lan)
3) £118 MSI K8N SLI-Platinum,Socket 939,PCI-Express,SATA Motherboard (No wireless lan)
4) £117 Abit AN8 SLI Skt939, NForce4 SLI, PCI-E,Snd,Lan Motherboard (no wireless lan)

The abit motherboard is recomended in one of toms tests but maybe you can shed light on the situation.

By the way thanks for all your help!!!!!

Id go with the MSI board heard great review about it...
As for the ram as long as its branded it shoukld be all right!
If you can possibly find what chips are used on it that could be usefull.

Why going with SLI?
What video cards are you buying?
I tried to enter that website but it's not working.

If you don't need SLI you can get an Epox-9NPA+Ultra Motherboard for around £81.

Actually I was looking for something good for him, if you look at the time the posts are a few minutes apart. But If I wait 'til I finish typing, searching, fixing the links etc. by the time I hit reply somebody else replied.

I guess I could edit my post.

BTW I know you only posted that to get to nimble knuckle

Congrats

I think that if you click on one of the private msg links it shows your post count.

Yep it's read private msg.

After a while you won't care about your post count but it really feels good when you're in the stranger, newbie, etc titles.

Thanks guys for the help.

Sorry it was .com not .co.uk
www.eclipsecomputers.com
please take a look at this site as ive found that it really is the cheapest.

As for gfx card im getting a nvidia 6800 gt, ive been reading up and found that sli is just not worth the money. its better to buy the 7800 instead. so screw sli.

the motherboard must have raid, lan, and support amd 64 4000 or higher (including the newer x2 processors).

So do you need SLI, you don't or you don't know.
If you don't need it you can get a cheaper mobo and a better video card.

I really don't want to go down this road heh...but here it goes...

Sli is great! If you're using programs that make use of it. Otherwise forget about it. If BF2 gets a 30-50% increase in fps in sli, i'd go with a sli board...or a ati board whenever they gets their version of sli worked out. It's the same/similar to using 2 processors. If you don't use multithreaded programs...there is NO reason to buy a dual cpu...however, if you're running a file server and Oracle...you have a great use for dual or better processors.

As to buying a system, mobo: Asus premium (deluxe sucks ass), Msi, dfi, epox ultra and sli boards are great. They're all good solid boards that also OC quite well. If you're not OCing, then check some of the boards for current problems with those different mobos. One of the big things right now, is that the nforce firewall is crapping out on a lot of people. I don't know the details, but there are other issues as well. I like to chk the big forums where they have dedicated areas specific to mobo manufactures. I live in toms forum, but <A HREF="http://www.ocforums.com/" target="_new">overclockers</A> just has so much information. As to memory, 2x1024, will run but be careful. It might only run at 2T timings or at lower speeds. I would find where someone had actually used that specific set of ram at 400mhz and 1T timings before i bought it. There are so many questions out right now on whether or not winchester and better amd chips support 2gb at full speed in any formation. There ARE chips that run at 2x1024 at 1T and 400mhz and there are chips that run at 4x512 at 2T and 400mhz...but you have to know which ones. I've seen where a guy took 4x512 tccd ram to 260 fsb at 2T...which is awesome...but there is another guy that couldn't touch those speeds with the same ram and a similar setup. So be as familiar as you can be with the area before you decide to breach it. There are links to several articles in the memory section in different threads labeled "4x512 or 2gb can it be done..." those kinds of threads. Or if nothing else i could just link you to them.
