I have an old house where most of the electric sockets (besides those in the kitchen and bathroom) are not earthed. I plan to have an electrician in to put new wiring in eventually, but right now I want to replace the old sockets in the walls as they are from the 80's. Naturally the new ones I have bought are earthed. Is it ok just to connect the new ones to the old wiring in the meantime?

So long as you follow the wiring of the existing sockets -- get the polarity correct and (especially) do not connect anything but an earth lead to the socket's earth pin.
