I own a Dell XPS M1530. I never really treated the battery too good, so its in a really bad shape. However, I pretty much use my laptop like a desktop. Its always plugged in, lying on my desk and connected to a monitor, keyboard, mouse etc.

I was wondering, can I just remove the battery and run the laptop via mains (power)?

^Like Frozenlead said, yes you can do it. That's actually what they recommend for the way you use your laptop. To preserve the battery, charge it and then remove it and just run the system on AC.

I'm thinking of just getting rid of this laptop and getting a netbook, so I don't think I'll get a replacement battery. Thanks for the link, though
