Over the last year I have read countless post about the Western Digital Raptor HD. Time and time again I have read how much faster they are compared to any other HD in the same class. Ive even asked the question of which would be the fastest, One WD raptor or 2 "Take your pick" HDs in RAID1. Ive been told over and over that the single raptor would outperform the SATA1 config of any other brands on the market including some of Western Digitals HDs. Im not finding this to be true. Maybe I got a bad Raptor but I really doubt that. Ive run SiSandra and the PCMark 04 and 05 HD test and the SATA1 config beats the RAPTOR. The RAID1 consist of 2 Maxtor 120G 8MB CASHE 7200 RPM SATA drives.

Anyone care to comment? If im missing something please point it out. Im having a really hard time understanding where the price/performance of paying for 1 or 2 raptors makes since.

RAID1 is beating the single drive Raptor 74gig drive, is this in one area or across the board?
Why did you not publish your results?

I totally agree.. except for the RAID1 part.. you meant RAID0 (stripping) doesnt it? Because yes, a Raptor will be faster than a mirrored RAID array.

The Raptor is good for a single drive, but capacity is not really enough. That's why I always preferred a RAID0 array for my system.

Now, if those 74 gigs Raptors could have a better price, then I would get one for the OS. But for the price, unless you want to say that you have a Raptor, I dont see any reason for common users to have one.

I have RAID0 setup since 2002, with 2x40 gigs, then 2x120 gigs and now, 2x160 gigs and nothing will make me go back to single drive.

Could it be overclocking is causing problems with the SATA bus?
Have you also benchmarked it at stock speeed?

Only at stock speed, I dont run any of my components hard until I know if they run ok at stock.

Just the gears grinding in my head is all. I have a single 74gig Raptor and like it.
