How to notify friends of active IP?

Ok, had a thought. I've got a few friends who have FTP servers. The trouble is, their IPs and mine change alot (cable or modem users) so we have to keep telling each other our IPs.

Is there a way of letting my friends know, when i reconnect what my IP is?

I was thinking i could find a way to setup a ping to him through ICQ or something which would then appear on blackice. Dunno, first thoughts, anyone know how?

I think that there are services out there that let your friends use a specified address, belonging to some central server. That address links to your computer, and the address is automatically updated or something like that.
You can try <A HREF="http://www.dns2go.com" target="_new">http://www.dns2go.com</A>.

Yeah, that looks interesting and would probably do the job, but i'm looking for more of a quick, dirty and free solution really.

elphs, regarding th ip change and you other post about a firewall, if you go linux, and leave it on 24/7, you will likely keep the same ip (cable- not dialup), I've had the same one for a couple of months now- the dhcp server drops my ip, and coz the pc is on, it picks up the same one, only time I lose it is when (not IF!!) ntl servers have probs and I end up rebooting and resetting the cable modem.

Yeah, that's certainly true, but the cable conx is my mate's (the one i'm buildng the firewall for). I have a 56k modem conx myself.
