Hello,
How do you make gmail a default email for a web browser im using fire fox & Google Chrome. I am running windows 7

Just make the page google.com the homepage of the browser, log in, check the "save password" and "stay logged in" buttons. Then when you open your browser google will be there, with you already logged in and all you have to do is click on "mail" (I think they added some javascript or CSS which makes the menu div at the top of the page fade in quickly as soon as you move the mouse!)
I wouldnt bother with the toolbar personally, just save google.com as a favourite or bookmark and when you want to do a search you just click on that page and BOOM! you're there and you probably saved almost a centimetre of verticle space in your prowser window.
