HP PAVILION DV8000 17" Laptop Display colors faded

My laptop's screen has about 4 random thin vertical lines running through it (red, cyan, yellow, etc..). And now, my screen is faded (too light...colors look faded, and images etc.. are very low quality...almost look pastel like.) It's about 3 years old and I do NOT have any warranty on it anymore. I was told by an IT technician friend that I need to replace it... which would cost me about $130-$150. Is this correct? Or is there an easy cheaper fix? THANKS!
