Altec Lansing subwoofer

After I hooked up my 5.1 altec lansing ADA995 system to my new HP laptop (they worked fine on my old Dell Dimension XPS for 5 years), I started hearing a loud pop whenever I placed the laptop on "hibernate" or restarted it, but otherwise the speaker system worked well.. Then, after months of this, I heard some loud static followed by a loud boom, and then the subwoofer went dead. The satellite speakers (which are connected through the subwoofer) are still working, but no bass. There was a slight smell of burning rubber coming from the subwoofer.
I would appreciate getting a diagnosis of what could have gone wrong. Is it possible that the subwoofer can still be in good shape?
