Need help with Powerpoint XP! (please?)

I've got this simple but extremely serious problem.

After playing a *.avi file, I want a series of boxes to appear over various parts of the movie. I only hear the sound fx for the boxes, but I can't see them.

Even after I sent the movie file to the very back layer of the presentation and the boxes foward, it still seems the avi file has priority.

This worked on office 2000, why won't it work on office xp?

(BTW I have to use office xp now)
