Microsoft states the that there are four (4) supporting files for the
Registry Hive HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System
They list the supporting files as
(1) System
(2) System.alt
(3) System.log
(4) System.sav
Specifically, with Windows XP, is there such a file as System.alt - I don't
see it showing in the WINDOWS\System32\config folder - I do see a file label
SysEvent.evt - is this the System.alt file - has it been renamed ??? or is
the System.alt file not applicable to Windows XP ???
Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.general (More info?)
The system.alt file is a backup file for the system part of the registry
hive. Honestly I am not sure what would create that file, but I would
assume it is some sort of backup process.
I would advise against messing with any of these files. Let us know what
your problem is so we can try to offer a more targeted fix.

At this point in time, my question is for informational purposes only
As I stated in my original post, I am asking whether or not the System.alt
file mentioned in Microsoft knowledge base article 256986 is a file that is
normally found in WINDOWS\System32\config folder when your operating system
is Windows XP
We have several Windows XP computers - none of them are showing the file
labeled System.alt in the WINDOWS\System32\config folder
My guess is that this particular file (System.alt) does not specifically
pertain to Windows XP , but probably pertains to some of the other Windows
operating systems listed in said article
Is anyone running Windows XP showing this file in WINDOWS\System32\config ???
