Problems ending programs

Lately, my programs have not been closing properly. They seem to freeze when
closing, and then I get "program not responding" and I click the "end now"
button, or close them using Task Manager. It's mostly annoying, but it also
seems my system has been running slower. I have done a system check for
viruses. Any suggestions on fixing?

Scanning for non-viral malware is also indicated. Here are general
