I am considering purchasing a laptop for high-end gaming. Any assistance or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Here are my answers to the FAQ:
1_What is your budget? - Preferably around $3k, going as high as $4k.
2_What is the size of the notebook that you are considering? - Doesn't matter.
3_What screen resolution do you want? - Doesn't matter.
4_Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop? - Desktop replacement.
5_How much battery life do you need? - Not concerned. Will be plugged in more often than not.
6_Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)? - Yes. I'm mostly a WoW player (and I've considered that it doesn't have very high requirements) and I like to run everything on the highest settings. But I'm also a general gamer, and want the gaming power to be there when needed for new games.
7_What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo / Video editing, watching movies, Etc.) - Possibly some DVD burning, but mostly gaming.
8_How much storage (H.D.D Capacity) do you need? - Not much. I have a desktop with large storage capacity.
9_If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post the links to them. - Not tied to a specific site.
10_How long do you want to keep your laptop? - 3+ years.
11_What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ? - DVD reader/writer. Don't need Bluray.
12_Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons. - Have been looking at Sager. Not really sure what's out there though.
13_What country do you live in? - USA
14_Please tell us any additional information if needed.
I've been considering the Sager NP9280, because it can use a Core i7-975 and 1333MHz DDR3. But I am worried about the lack of dual graphics. What are the high end in laptop CPUs and graphics cards these days anyway?
High end CPUs, it varies. Intel has come out with mobile versions of the Core i7, but there isn't a whole lot of benefit in gaming. AMD isn't really competitive in the high-end laptop market in regards to CPUs.
With GPUs the GTX 280m is the most common. The Radeon Mobility HD 4870 is a good competitor but Asus was about the only one using it and the W90 doesn't seem to be available anymore.
IMO, configure one of those with a fast Core2Duo and dual GTX 280's and you are set for just about any game. And it should keep you under the $3000 mark.
Very much appreciated. I had read some on these forums about the W90, but hadn't realized it wasn't available.
Any thoughts on the Alienware m17x?
When you configure the M17x as closely as you can to the Sager NP9850 that I linked you, the Alienware ends up being about $100 more expensive. IMO, the Alienware is also ugly as sin but that's personal opinion.
