IE is encountering a problem and has to close whenever I view a .pdf
document. The culprit seems to be pdf.ocx. Should I try to update the
add-on, and if so how do I do it?

Upgrade to Adobe Reader 7.0 (Actually 7.0.2). Uninstall all
existing versions from Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs.
Uninstall them in descending order 6.02, 6.01....
Also, Reader 7.0 has been reworked for XP so start/load times
are significantly faster. One caveat, Reader now tries to sneak
Yahoo Toolbar into it's install routine, so check install options
carefully.

Download here:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downl [...] rm=Windows
Get the 7.0.2, as the 2nd selection in the table.

According to the system requirements, 7.0.1 needs to be installed
first. My version is 5.0.1. What to do?

In Add/Remove programs, uninstall Reader 5.0.1. Then, locate and download
Reader 7.0.1 off the web. Then, process the update.
