turn off beeps

XP Home, SP-2 on a new laptop.
How do I turn off - permanently - the beeps that occur when a Windows popup
window appears asking something like "Are you sure you want to Delete ....?"
or "Proceed/Cancel" and similar?

I don't mind the warnings. I just wish they could do it silently.

Try CONTROL PANEL|SOUNDS. For any event, you can choose NONE.
Select the vent, then click the arrow to the right of the dropdown box.
