Hello,
We have just purchased a new portable heater and want to protect it. We have power outages quite often so I want to put it on a surge protector but don't know how many joules is required. It runs on 110 volts, 1483 watts, 12.5 amps. It uses infrared bulbs. Can you tell how many joules are needed for my surge protector?

Most surge protectors don't work. Your house already has circuit breakers to protect the appliances.
your idea really has no foundation in reality. You bought a heater that uses IR light bulbs, and when they burn out, you will replace them.
There is no surge protector that is going to protect a light bulb.
