I purchased a MachSpeed MB (for the lifetime warranty) that has a memory bus rating of DDR333Mhz. At the same time (trusting the Tiger Direct agent from whom I made the purchase) I bought a 512MB stick of PC3200 (DDR400), trusting his recommendation. After installation I noticed that the MB would not accept the chip in slot 1. Obviously... So, I moved the chip to slot 2 and it worked! When the machine boots though, it shows the chip as type-DDR400 and clockspeed-333Mhz. I then went into the BIOS and changed the timing to 200Mhz and now it recognizes it as DDR400 all around. The down side is that the chip still only works in slot 2. It is not recognized in slot 1 or 3 at all. So, my question is, do I have a MB issue or is it just because I am using RAM that exceeds the manufacturers rating for the MB? I want to upgrade to a Gig, but if the other two slots don't work then why bother? It works ok with 512MB but I want more power! Can anyone help?

What I think is going on is that your motherboard reads the SPD value from the SLot one(and slot 3?). Maybe when you put it in slot 2 it defaults...
So when you put it in slot 1, it try to run it at drr400 with rather agressive timming and it doesnt work.

Now when you say dont accept, do you mean the computer wont boot?
If you can boot with memory in slot one, you should change the memory setting from Automatic(read from spd) to manual and set it to the right value!

The computer will not boot at all when the memory is in slot one or two. I will try to change the auto to manual.

To do that, have the RAM in slot 2, go into bois and change the settings, then save, turn it off and move the RAM.

Mike.

PS: Sounds like a broken mobo to me, but I guess this is worth a try...

I am also confused as to what Via states on their website RE: the VIA Apollo P4X400 chipset that the MB has. It states that Memory Support is 200/266/333/ 400MHz and Memory Type is only DDR200/266/333 SDRAM. Could the 400Mhz listed under Support be a Typo?

Oh here's the problem, its a VIA chipset!!!
If it supports DDR400 speed, it will support your ram...A typo would be rather surprising!but hey it via!
