[40k] Marine shoulder markings

I've been looking through WD and checking out GW website, but I can't find a
100% consistency in the markings of marines.
Am I correct in thinking that the chapter marking goes on the left shoulder
pad, and the rank/squad markings go on the right? Or is it the other way
around? (Assuming there is a solid rule to this)

That then brings us to the plastic techmarine from the SM accessory sprue.
Does the Adeptus Mechanicus shoulder pad count as chapter or rank for him? I
thinking that a techmarine belongs to the AM, and is only assigned to a
chapter.

What about a techmarine on a titan? (If they're in tanks, I suppose they're
in some of the bigger titans, too) Adeptus Mechanicus shoulder pad as
chapter, and Titan Legion pad as rank?

Unfortunately, GW is not very consistent when it comes to Marine markings.

This is almost always the case, except for Terminators, where the chapter
marking is on the right and the Crux Terminatus is on the left.
And by right/left I mean the Space Marine's right and left.

Erm, I don't know this one. <checks his metal techmarine>
It appears that the AM goes on the right, and I would put chapter marking on
the left. So I suppose the AM mark indicates his job or rank.

you won't.

this seems to be the arrangement for codex chapters.

he's a specialist, so it would go opposite the chapter badge.

negative. techmarines belong to their chapters but serve an apprenticeship
on mars.

nope. the adeptus titanicus doesn't have its own marine chapter
