Transferring hard drive contents from PC to PC

Hello,
I just bought a new computer with Windows 7 and would like to transfer all programs and files from my old computer to my new one, hopefully without having to reinstall it all. Is that possible and if so, how?
Any help on the matter would be appreciated. :)

More about transferring hard drive contents
  1. Files can be copy, but programs need to reinstall.
  2. The easy way is with a flash drive. Applications will have to be re-installed which shouldn't be a problem because you had the disks to install them the first time.
  3. If you have huge amounts of data files, music/pictures, best remove the drive from your old PC and install it temporarily in your new one, ensurng that our new HDD is favoured in BIOS. Another way is by using a crossover ethernet cable http://www.wikihow.com/Connect-Two-Computers-Together-with-an-Ethernet-Cable
    Don't try to copy progs...
