How to run chkdsk from DOS and safe mode?

I hope this is not a software/windows question, but I want to run chkdsk on my hard drive. I don't have any problems with my hd right now but would like to know the following anyway (just in case )

How do I run chkdsk from DOS and how do I run it when starting the computer in safe mode.

How should the DOS-commands then be written to run chkdsk?

its suppose to be in the PATH...so you open up a command prompt and type chkdsk!!

with MS repair console(when startign with the windows cd and choosing repair instead of install) you can run it there too...
