I saw it in the bookstore the other day, and was wondering if anyone here
has read it yet. I probably need to get it just for GK fluff (which I am
woefully ignorant of, considering my long-delayed GK army is the one that
got me into 40k in the first place), but damn, it's $7 US. For that much
I'd like for it to also be at least a moderately enjoyable read; plus I
guess I still feel like paperbacks are supposed to cost under $5 like they
did while I was growing up.
Now I'm not expecting classic sci-fi from a 40k book - but I know _some_ of
the 40k stuff can be enjoyable. For instance, I found the Ian Watson
"Inquisition War" novels to be fun in a pulpy kind of way, and some of the
short story collections aren't horrible. But I haven't read any of the
other 40k novels, and I've heard some of them are quite dire. So, can
anyone give me a thumbs up/thumbs down on this one before I waste $8 that
could have bought another blister of minis?

It's alright as trashy sci-fi (I happen to be in a trashy sci-fi phase
at the moment - so it was what I wanted). It does a good job of
making normal grey knights in power armour seem the norm, as from the
models you get so used to seeing the terminators (though that might
just be me as I have my GKTs sat on top of my monitor at home . Also
makes the stand more independantly than they appear in the
deamonhunter codex.

I've read a few now. My faves have to be the Dan Abbnet Eisenhorn
trilogy (though I think it kinda lost the place towards the end) and
his current pair of Ravenor books (the first of which is really
good). I also read one, the title of which I forget, about a lone
Raptor stuck on a planet and the female Interigator trying to track
him down, and that started well but ended pants (Lord of the Night or
something - it was so bad I just discarded it in a hotel room).
Anyway, the GK is enjoyable nonsense and good fluff for the GKs.

in terms of game background you wouldn't really be missing anything by not
buying it. ben counter is certainly one of the better authors under the
black library flag, but $7 (which is still a good deal compared to the
prices here) is a lot of money for any pulp paperback. I've read it and
it's not a bad novella as the BL range goes, but I dunno if I'd be prepared
to pay THAT much money for it.

Ok, while I got a split decision on actually purchasing it, it seems like
both of you agree that it's not horrible. I'll keep my eyes open at this
one used bookstore I know where someone perodically keeps dumping their
Black Library stuff after they've read them a few times - maybe I'll get
lucky and the GK book will show up there in a month or three. I actually
picked up the "Eisenhorn" trilogy there back at the beginning of the year,
but I have so much other stuff in my "to read" list that I doubt I'll get to
them before midsummer.
In any event, thanks to both of you!

I tried looking at the PDFs on the Black Library site once to see if
any of them looked half decent. The first I clicked on was Iron Hands.
"There was an explosion in the air that shook the ruins on the ground
and threw some of the Space Marines to the ground. It would be madness
for the Iron Eagle to risk its own survival to ensure the safety of the
troops on the ground."
Three grounds in two sentences? These being the second and third
sentences in the book respectively. I wrote better than that I was 12.
