Hi All,

I am preping for a budget PC build, and in the mean time using parts to try to upgrade my Dell.

Bought an SATA DVD drive and an SATA hard drive.

I am dual-booting with XP and Linux, and get a GRUB error anytime the new SATA HDD is connected. When I unplug the SATA HDD, all is fine. Someone mentioned that I may need an upgrade for the chipset. Does that make sense? If so, how can I find out what chipset I have? I can not seem to find it listed in the Dell users manual.

Any ideas how I can solve this problem?

Thanks for any help

I assume this is a SATA2 drive? If so, you'll need to jumper the hard drive to force SATA1 mode. This is a known issue with the ICH 5. If your hdd doesn't have jumpers, then you're simply SOL.

Have fun.
