i have an acer 10.1 notebook from a relative who gave it to me because they can't get in to the system because they lost the password. Can the password be changed, or reset, or does something else need to be done?

Hi There are many ways to recover the assword if it is purely the Operating System.
One i recommend is Spotmau

if its a windows password you can use a linux live cd and install some utilities for removing windows passwords

XP home - boot into safe mode and you can remove the password from there
