DEP Driver error after SP2 upgrade

Howdy,

We're testing SP2 for deployment at work and as soon as I installed it I got
a STOP error because of a driver problem. This page has the information on
the 0x000000FC error I got:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;886348

It lists 2 workarounds which include 1) Disabling the driver causing the
probelm and 2) Turning off DEP.

Since I have no way of knowing which driver that might be causing the
problem, I had to use option 2 which did seem to work.

However, is there some way I can run a utility or check something to find
out which driver on my system is the one that's incompatible with DEP? I
have plenty of drivers on my Dell D610 but have no idea which one it might be
that's having issues.

Thanks for any help.

Anyone have any ideas?

As a quick relatively safe first stab at it I would try booting
into Safe mode and see if the problem goes away. That uncouples
some of the drivers and seems like it would divide the problem
roughly in half. But that's just my preferred problem solving
method.

I was able to get the error to go away already but booting to safe mode and
doing the Workaround listed on the link in my OP. That copmeltely turned off
that check so I can now boot fine. Main thing I was looking for is if
there's some sort of utility that could be run on a system BEFORE SP2 is
installed that will check the drivers so I can know if a computer is going to
have the problem after SP2 goes on or not.

Just wanted to be proactive instead of reactive but if MS didn't provide a
tool to do that, I guess I can't.

As a second quick trial I'd list all the drivers&devices on the
machine and post the list in the alt.sys.pc-clone.dell newsgroup
to see if anyone there might notice a Dell specific problem.
But that seems unlikely to turn up an answer.

For a year I've been thinking that SP2 could have checked for and
pointed out a whole variety of problems BEFORE installing itself.

What they hell where they thinking?!?!

My apologies for this stuff they sell and call software
