[40k] SM Command Squad Questions...

Ok, I'm putting my "Brothers of the Sword" chapter together and I've only
got as far as my HQ choice before I'm somewhat puzzled by the codex...

Do specialists get term honours (and can therefore select additional
wargear) or do I need to buy term honours for my sargeant and then each
specialist I want to upgrade?

Standard weapons are listed as bolter or bp+ccw, does this include the
specialists? I.e. I don't have to then pay the listed cost in the armoury if
I want to give my specialists the standard weapons?

So far my list for my command squad looks like this (based on my best guess
answers to the above questions). I realise this is very expensive, but it
fits with my fluff and theme;

=HQ=

Captain [60]

Storm Bolter [5], Power Sword [15]

Purity Seals [5]

Furious Charge [3]

Frag Grenades [1]

89pts

Command Squad (5) [75]

Sergeant, Terminator Honours [15], Plasma Pistol [10], Power Sword [10]

Apothecary [25], Narthecium, Reductor, Terminator Honours [10], Bolter [1],
Power Sword [10]

Company Standard Bearer [25], Chapter Banner [25], Terminator Honours [10],
Bolter [1], Power Sword [10]

Company Champion [20], Combat Shield, Bolt Pistol, Power Sword, Terminator
Honours [10]

Marine, Flamer [6]

Furious Charge [15]

Frag Grenades [5]

283pts

Razorback [70]

Extra Armour [5], Smoke Launchers [3]

78pts

Total 450pts

Any and all pointers appreciated.

I appear to have misplaced my codex, so I'm going from memory here, but...

Specialists with term honours can use the armoury, specialists without term
honours can't.

If you want your specialists to have term honours then you have to buy the
whole squad term honours.

Specialists gain extra equipment, but their weapons remain the same as the
rest of the squad. Well, except the champion, who has his weapons as part of
his specialist gear, so if you want to give him a bolter (first WHY?) you
have to upgrade the whole squad to term honours and buy one from the armoury
for him.

Storm bolters I think work best on either the cheapest, shootiest hero you
can find, or possibility as armament for a veteran sergeant if you want to
put one in a fire support squad.
For this guy I'd go with a pistol of some sort instead of the stombolter.

As I read it heroes do not pay for veteran skills. If a hero wants a veteran
skill they have to buy a command squad. The command squad then buys a
veteran skill, and any heroes that are attached to the command squad gain
the skill for free.

Ok, so why the bolters? This squad is EXPENSIVE and you can get better
quality shooting for less elsewhere in the list. If you want a shooty
command squad include a heavy weapon or two (or possibly plasma guns) and
equip everyone else with a bolter, don't bother with a vet serge, and the
only specialist to consider is an apothecary. If you want a fighty command
squad (which is what it looks like at the mo) then pistols, ccws, and
assault weapons for everybody.

> Marine, Flamer [6]

This guy needs termi honours so everyone else can have them.

Defiantly an assulty squad, so why the shooty stuff?

Personally I'd go with a rhino and a bigger squad in large games, or a hero
with no command squad at all in small games, but as a razorback, well it
looks good to me.

Add a few more points and you can use this squad to upgrade a 1500 point
list to a 2000 pt one! beyond that I cant say much without seeing the rest
of the army it goes with.

From my reading of the codex, I'd say it's the latter and they
each have to buy termie honors individually if they want access to the
armory.

If I'm reading the rules correctly - then yes, they get them
'standard' as well and don't have to pay for them. Otherwise you'd have
Medics, etc walking around the battlefield unarmed.

Hope that helps,

Myrmidon

Yup, I was just a bit puzzled by the way the codex lists the specialists,
then says specialists with term hons can select additional equipment, but
doesn't specify if there is a cost for term hons (or if they come with
them). It does list the cost later.

> If you want your specialists to have term honours then you have to buy the

I'm not sure if thats right or not. The codex says you can buy term hons for
the sarge and _may_ buy term hons for the rest of the squad if you do at
10pts/model. Do you have to buy them for the whole squad if you do, can't
just buy them for certain members?

The codex says nothing about the attached characters getting the skill for
free. It just says 3pts/model...

> Ok, so why the bolters?

Yup, they should be pistols and should be free.

Can sum1 confirm this?

Thanks for the help.

Thats what I suspected, but do you have to buy term hons for the whole
squad?

Yeah, thats pretty obvs tbh. Thanks though ;)

Found it! I forgot they actually put some fluff in this one.

It doesn't say they come with them, so they don't, simple!
This means you can have a relatively cheap squad with basic specialists, or
an ultra elite squad with specialists that you can trick out to your heart's
content.

"...then ALL other Space Marines in the squad may be given Terminator
Honours..."
(emphasis added).

If they meant "any", then they wouldn't have said "all".

I know, and I'm not entirely convinced by my reasoning either. I'd probably
pay for it anyway, just to be on the safe side, but I'm not convinced you
have to.
