Look into "Elby CloneDVD2" and/or "DVD Shrink".

The consumer making backups of commercial movie DVDs are illegal, pure and
simple. Thanks to legislation promoted by the filmmaking industry.

Do people continue to make "backups"? Yes.

How to make these copies is not hard to find out.
How to copy some DVD movies with more than standard copy protections can be
found in some DVD associated newsgroups.

The promotion, discussion, and providing links to such is detrimental to
this if its to continue.

Please show us one court precedent where someone was convicted for doing
something illegal by making copies of a DVD that one ownes for their own
personal non-commercial use.

"The Judge"!
In California when 321studios was sued said that "it is NOT, repeat NOT
illegal" for someone to make a backup of DVD movies that they purchased
legally, but he ruled that it was illegal for 321 studios to sell the
software to do so. Why on Earth can't people understand this?

Here is a great website on how to set them up for use.

The legalities depend entirely where you live and the laws of your
government.

Because most people don't understand their "fair use" rights. And what
they have heard about it comes from the FUD spread by the Corporate
Copyright Elite, and its sycophants.

Hell, even the DMCA, the law most people believe makes it illegal for
them to circumvent copy-protection technologies, like CSS in DVDs,
protects an individuals right to "fair use."

"TITLE 17, CHAPTER 12, § 1201, (c) Other Rights, Etc., Not Affected.—(1)
Nothing in this section shall affect rights, remedies, limitations, or
defenses to copyright infringement, including fair use, under this
title." - From the DMCA

Of course. This is a direct descendant of the copying of VCR tapes being
illegal. Or the taping of copyrighted TV programs. Or audio tapes.

I believe mere memorization of dialog is also illegal. Or humming a tune you
heard on the radio.

What a scary thought! Best said by my great grandfather: You go looking to
see if there is a law against something, you will find one. So why give
them the idea?
