I have windows vista home premium, 32 bit. My laptop will no longer read dvds, cds, blank or otherwise

Sounds like the drive is toast. Check the device's properties to see if it is running properly. It will probably tell you that it is, but it sounds like it's done. You could try and update the driver/firmware before writing it off though.

I had the same problem on my old gateway laptop. I had to replace the drive.
