I don't know, but HL2 won at GameSpy for best graphics (at IGN also I think... but they are related now so no biggie there) BUT GS did give Doom3 and FarCry awards in Graphics Innovation.
Doom 3 is really an awesome graphics technology, and I cannot wait to see what John does with it for QuakeIV and id's next game. While I love HL2's art style and it is a wonderful engine, I think looking forward that engines like Doom3 are the future. When you have real lights and real shadows, you can begin deforming the environment at will (if you have the power). Although on Beyond3d someone had said that companies like Nvidia were suggesting to go the shader route for shadows as it scales better compared to how D3 uses the CPU for this. Anyhow, D3 is an awesome technology--and a great throw back classic FPS--and is worthy of praise. If D3 is anything like Q3, we will see the engine in a lot of games in the future and it will realy be built and expanded on. This is all great for consumers of course
While one could argue high optimizations are in HL2's engine because of the high performance, I could also argue it's easily because they're indeed less complex. Who knows, could be both. It does bring a lot to the table like D3's engine though.
It would definitely be nice to see what an outdoor game using the D3 engine would be like, to see if it really does compete the HL2 engine's might in outdoor handling.
