OK, I picked up the Wood Elf Army Book a couple of days ago, and have
been looking through it. Is it just me, or do they seem seriously
lacking in hand-to-hand? Anything that makes it through the arrow-storm
is pretty much going to wipe out their whole army. The eternal guard
have heavy armor, and can fight in two ranks, which will come in handy
when their front rank is wiped out in the first combat round.

I read the battle report in the latest WD, and they managed to lose just
about every close combat, except when they got 2-3 units up against one.
And of course the usual WD team "great" army selection of too many too
small units helped a lot.

On to the ambiguities; when you upgrade Glade Guard to Scouts, do they
still get to take the GG unit upgrades? I.e. champion, standard, etc?

The Wood Elves can hit hard and hit fast, but they can't take being
hit back. I think most people will use them too defensively. They
work great in an aggressive mode of moving forward with mobile fire
support and then charging into combat, but a lot of people think you
should wait for the enemy to charge you. Oh, what a brilliant idea!
I sincerely hope my WE opponents do that for me.

There's the key. Don't make the units small.

I'm guessing no on the standard and musician, yes on the champion.
They do become skirmishers, right?

Sure but they can survive a charge if you have a noble, then with their
reasonable initative 15 attacks at WS5 back in the next round (assuming
frontage of 5), they can do some ok damage, though STR3 and no way to
improve is a bummer.
