Hi,

I recently acquired an older Gateway PC to use as a server. I took out a
few bits, and now I'm testing them in case they might be of any use.

One item is a modem. It is:
Gateway part no: 6001259
Chipset is: Conexant RH56D/SP PCI
This looks like the one:
http://www.gateway.com/mes/specs/56K_PCI_Voice_Modem.html

I realise that this is a winmodem and probably not very good. In fact
I've already found that it is very picky about what PCI slot it is put
into. I'd still like to see if it's working or not though.

So, any idea where a driver for it might be found?

I've looked on the Gateway site and found nothing so far. Not to say
that there's nothing there, but I haven't found it due to the site being
a bit like a maze, with secret rooms etc.
I've looked on DriverGuide and tried two drivers, neither of which worked.

Any thoughts? I know... chuck it in the bin! ;-)

Sounds like you're digging through this machine and trying to find out what
parts are what. "Aida32" Personal might be a helpful program for you. I
bought and old Gateway AMD 900 off eBay and used it to ID the parts for me.

Well, in theory I know what they are as they are all marked with part
no.s etc. It's understanding them and getting drivers that's a tad
tricky. Gateway's site is not easy to navigate, and there seem to be
areas not obviously accessible from the menus. Once you know the URLs
then great, but finding 'em is another matter.

Aida sounds interesting. I'll have a look. Thanks.

John,

I seem to recall that the Conexant web site has drivers for modems with its
chipsets. Google for Conexant RH56D/SP and the word driver and see what turns
up. The chip industry has been in turmoil with mergers and spinoffs for years,
so maybe Conexant is part of another company now. It used to be part of
Rockwell. I can't keep them all straight any more... Ben Myers

Hi Ben,

I've been doing that and found quite a few drivers. The thing is that
Conexant only sold (sell) chips and other people make the actual modems.
Tried a few drivers without much success, but finally found the modem on
the Gateway site. Apparently it's a 'Red Owl'. ;-) I've got the right
driver now, but it seems like the old PC I am using to test might not be
up to spec. re. PCI for this modem. I'll have to try another.

As far as I can tell Conexant is the new name for Rockwell, but whether
they just changed their name, or restructured, or what, I don't know.
Actually, their web site says:
"Conexant was launched as an independent entity in January 1999 after
Rockwell International Corp. spun off its Rockwell Semiconductor System
business to shareowners."

Thanks, John
