One shot wargear kicks ass! (At least for marines it does.) I
seriously wish Nids had the biological equivolent. Honestly - how
likely are you going to be in position to fire a flamer for example more
than once in a game? Anwser - not very likely. Vet Sgt or character
with a combi flamer has the potential to line up one good shot, it's
just unlikely that they'll get *more than one* even in a 6 turn game.
As for a combi bolter/plasma gun - you do realize you can use this 'one
shot' weapon to fire multiple times in a single 'shot' don't you?
Double tapping it gets you 2 templates for a reasonable risk factor and
damn low points. With the decent BS skill and 3+ save of your typical
marine, it becomes seriously attractive. Again, using this at a
critical time can effectively swing the course of a combat or the whole
game.
(For the Nids, I would have liked to have seen 'one shot' biomorphs like
'Mono-adrenal glands' that allowed a monstrous creature an extra 6
inches of movement {in either movement phase or HTH phase} once per game
- could only be taken once per critter. Or a 'Pyro-acid' one shot
flamer template. That sort of thing...)

Yeah, and they still do.

It's always September, sometimes it's just 'more September' than others.

Yup.

It's not bad, but it's overpriced by 5 pts.

Yes, you can Rapid-Fire it. But if you're going to Fire short-range,
why not just start with a Pistol and get the +1A all the time, with less
risk of self-immoloation? Double-tap Plasma = 5/9 self-wound = 5/27
self-kill for a 45-pt model = give 10 VPs when using it...

Huh? *Templates*? Please clarify.

LCs re-roll ALL wounds vs 1 hit. They are always better than a PS.

Templates? Its a combi-plasma *gun*, not a plasma cannon!
I've noticed 40K wargear tends to have far fewer shooty items than close
combat items - combi weapons are one of the few ways a character can upgrade
his ranged attack, though I'm not 100% convinced they're worth the points.

Heh - now you're starting to sound like RTM.

Not really - he gets to shoot the 'bolter' it's attached with his
good BS the entire rest of the game.

As Ward pointed out - I'm thinking of the Plasma-cannon, and not
the plasma gun. As for using the plasma pistol, I like them, but every
good RGMW'er knows 'Elvis wouldn't be caught dead using a plasm pistol.'

I thought the ideal combo was master crafted lightning claws.

Doh! (That's it - I'm 'souping' mine up. Of course the thing
would have to have wheels on the bottom of it to have an 'under-slung'
plasma-cannon on a bolter. But that's what bribery and the local tech
marine are for in the first place

Points wise I'd rate - combi flamer #1, combi-plasma #2, and combi-melta
a distant 3rd in terms of value. If you're close enough to both need
and use a melta, you should have gotten a power fist or melta-bombs
instead.

RE: Rhino Conversion...
I intended to put a smaller gun on it but never got around to
it. Ahh space marine ordinance envy will make you do funny things.

<snip>
One of my favourite conversions is a Veteran Scout Sergeant ("Get 'em,
boys!" ) with combi-flamer. I used the HB scout as the basis. The
combi-flamer is the ubiquitous 2nd ed bolter with hand flamer conversion,
and he carries an auspex in the left hand. The "eat lead" facial expression
looks more like "that can't be - that's in the room" with this wargear,
quite amusing. He's still undercoated, maybe I'll break out the paint and
finish him off, for old time's sake
The cool thing is that it only costs 5 pts for single wound characters - the
split cost wargear is one of my favourite things in the 4th Ed codex.

CombiFlamer doesn't come on the Commander Sprue, and I'm too lazy/inept
to make one myself.
as said why not use a PP. Unless you need the 1 24" shot or that rapid
fire shot while moving. I *suppose* I could use it just cause I like the
look of the gun but I like the look of the melta better. Ho-hum.
I had a feeling MC was only 1 re-roll. But Never let research get in the
way of a good, or not so good, question.
