Problems with USB caddy

Please can someone help?
I'm using a USB enclosure to add a 160Gb HDD to my computer. Sometimes, the
drive is not recognised at all, but even when I can get Windows XPHome to
eventually show the drive in My Computer, I can only access it for about ten
minutes. After this time I get a Write Failed error message, if I try to save
anything to it.
I have tried the drive (a Maxtor DiamondMax) as master, slave, or cable
select, but no luck.
Looking through this help group, I found one recommendation to delete the
USB ports and reinstal them. How do I do this, please?

My machine has AMD 2400+ 2Gb with 1024Mb RAM. Hope this helps.

Thanks in anticipation.

Thanks for your advice.
The mini CD which came with the caddy does not seem to have any drivers on
it, only utilities such as VIA, Genysys and Realtek. There are 18 folders in
all and I don't know which is which as the caddy itself is unbranded, and
there is no makers mark on the miniCD.
Don't know if this will help, but sometimes I get an error message to the
effect that I am connecting a USB high speed device to a non high speed port.
According to device manager, they are all enhanced USB ports though.
